Exploring the Future of Biotechnology from Earth to Outer Space

We were so excited to host our inaugural Fem Dialogue Series online panel, “From Earth to Outer Space: Conversations About Biotechnology, Ethics and Art”, in May 2024, in which we explored groundbreaking ideas at the intersection of transhumanism, space biology, and genetic engineering.

The panellists first addressed the fascinating topic of biological adaptation. Moderator Noémie Soula (bio artist and researcher) and guest panellists Agi Haines (speculative designer, artist and lecturer) and Angelo Vermeulen (space biologist, complex systems engineer and artist) explored the biopolitics of life ownership and emphasised the necessity for a multi-generational approach to space exploration, given the challenges of ecosystem reproduction in space.

Together, they delved into the ethical implications of genetic selection technologies and the potential need for adaptive surgeries to facilitate human survival in extraterrestrial environments. Socioeconomic factors related to space travel were also discussed, raising questions about who could afford to go to space and who would be left out. The panel also highlighted the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration, with bio art and speculative design serving as mediums to confront our existential fears and foster innovation for more desirable futures.

A special thanks to our visionary panellists, Noémie Soula, Agi Haines, and Angelo Vermeulen, for generously sharing their invaluable insights and expertise and engaging in an inspiring and eye-opening discussion about the transformative potential of collective intelligence and co-creation in shaping the future of biotechnology on Earth and in outer space!

Our panel attracted a diverse audience, including aerospace engineers, speculative design enthusiasts, and biotech professionals, all drawn by the interdisciplinary discussion. Many sought inspiration and insights into ethical practices in space and bio design. Others were motivated by personal connections to the panellists and a shared passion for exploring the intersection of biotechnology, ethics, and art. For more details, visit Eventbrite.
